1And there was a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was firstborn of Joseph; for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore, he had Gilead and Bashan. |

2There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida. These are the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by their families. |

And there fell ten portions to Manasseh. i.e., six for the six fathers’ houses enumerated above, and four for the daughters of Zelophehad, not that each one should be considered an individual father’s house, [for they were five - Kara] but they received four shares: (1) The share of their father who was one of those who left Egypt, and according to the number of those who left Egypt the land was apportioned; (2) and his share with his brothers in the property of Hepher, who was also one of those who left Egypt; and (3) he was the firstborn, and received two portions; and (4) in addition, they had the share of their father’s brother, who died in the wilderness without children, and they received inheritance in his share. Our Rabbis stated this in Baba Bathra. It was not necessary for the scripture to relate to us the number of the daughters’ shares, except to teach us that they received the firstborn share, and to inform us that Eretz Israel was an inherited share which belonged to them from the time of their forefathers, for otherwise, the firstborn does not receive an extra share of that which is fit to come into the father’s possession, as he does in that which the father had already acquired. |

forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me thus?. Forasmuch as you have seen that my number has increased from the first count to the second count by 20,500, signified by the numerical value of כֹּה (25). In the first count you find in Manasseh in the book of Numbers 32,200, and in the Sidrah Pinchas, 52,700. Another explanation is: forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me even until כה, the blessing which was bestowed on Abraham: (“So כֹּה) shall be your seed,” was fulfilled in me. And according to peshat, forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me thus, as you see. |
