Chapter 4

1And King Solomon was king over all Israel.   אוַֽיְהִי֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה מֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:
Was king over all Israel. For when they saw his wisdom they all rejoiced in his kingdom.   מֶלֶךְ עַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל.  מִשֶּׁרָאוּ בְּחָכְמָתוֹ, שָׂמְחוּ כֻּלָּם בְּמַלְכוּתוֹ.
2And these (were) the princes whom he had, Azariahu the son of Zadok the priest.   בוְאֵ֥לֶּה הַשָּׂרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁר־ל֑וֹ עֲזַרְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־צָד֖וֹק הַכֹּהֵֽן:
3Elihoreph and Ahiah, the sons of Shisha, scribes, Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud the recorder.   גאֱלִיחֹ֧רֶף וַאֲחִיָּ֛ה בְּנֵ֥י שִׁישָׁ֖א סֹפְרִ֑ים יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט בֶּן־אֲחִיל֖וּד הַמַּזְכִּֽיר:
Scribes. to write the chronicles of the king.   סֹפְרִים.  לִכְתֹּב דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים.
the recorder. [His duty was to remind the king] which judgment came before him first, that he might decide it first. So I heard.   הַמַּזְכִּיר.  אֵיזֶה מִשְׁפָּט בָּא לְפָנָיו רִאשׁוֹן, שֶׁיִּפְסְקֶנּוּ רִאשׁוֹן, כָּךְ שָׁמַעְתִּי.
4And Benaiahu the son of Jehoiada (was) over the host, and Zadok and Abiathar (were) the priests.   דוּבְנָיָ֥הוּ בֶן־יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע עַל־הַצָּבָ֑א וְצָד֥וֹק וְאֶבְיָתָ֖ר כֹּהֲנִֽים:
5And Azariahu the son of Nathan (was) over the officers, and Zabud the son of Nathan (was) principal officer, and the king's friend.   הוַעֲזַרְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־נָתָ֖ן עַל־הַנִּצָּבִ֑ים וְזָב֧וּד בֶּן־נָתָ֛ן כֹּהֵ֖ן רֵעֶ֥ה הַמֶּֽלֶךְ:
Was over the officers. He had twelve officers to supply the food of the king and his household.   עַל הַנִּצָּבִים.  שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר נְצִיבִים הָיוּ, לְכַלְכֵּל אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ וְאֶת בֵּיתוֹ.
6And Ahishar (was) over the household, and Adoniram the son of Abda (was) over the levy.   ווַאֲחִישָׁ֖ר עַל־הַבָּ֑יִת וַאֲדֹנִירָ֥ם בֶּן־עַבְדָּ֖א עַל־הַמַּֽס:
Was over the levy. which Solomon had raised on the Israelites, as it is said, “And king Solomon raised a levy” (below 5:27).   עַל הַמַּס.  שֶׁהֶעֱלָה עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל, כְּמָה שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיַּעַל הַמֶּלֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹה מַס.
7And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, who provided victuals for the king and his household, each man had to make provision for a month in the year.   זוְלִשְׁלֹמֹ֞ה שְׁנֵים־עָשָֹ֚ר נִצָּבִים֙ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְכִלְכְּל֥וּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וְאֶת־בֵּית֑וֹ חֹ֧דֶשׁ בַּשָּׁנָ֛ה יִהְיֶ֥ה עַל־הָאֶחָ֖ד (כתיב אֶחָ֖ד) לְכַלְכֵּֽל:
Who provided victuals for the king. all his meals, and the food of the numerous horses and all the needs of his expenditures.   וְכִלְכְּלוּ אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ.  כָּל סְעוּדָתוֹ, וּמַאֲכַל הַסּוּסִים, וְכָל צָרְכֵי הוֹצָאָה.
8And these are their names, the son of Hur, on Mount Ephraim.   חוְאֵ֣לֶּה שְׁמוֹתָ֔ם בֶּן־ח֖וּר בְּהַ֥ר אֶפְרָֽיִם:
9The son of Deker, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beth-shemesh, and Elon-beth-hanan.   טבֶּן־דֶּ֛קֶר בְּמָקַ֥ץ וּבְשַֽׁעַלְבִ֖ים וּבֵ֣ית שָׁ֑מֶשׁ וְאֵיל֖וֹן בֵּ֥ית חָנָֽן:
10The son of Hesed, in Aruboth, to him (pertained) Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher.   יבֶּן־חֶ֖סֶד בָּֽאֲרֻבּ֑וֹת ל֥וֹ שׂכֹ֖ה וְכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ חֵֽפֶר:
11The son of Abinadav, all the region of Dor; Tapath the daughter of Solomon was to him as a wife.   יאבֶּן־אֲבִֽינָדָ֖ב כָּל־נָ֣פַת דֹּ֑אר טָפַת֙ בַּת־שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה הָ֥יְתָה לּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה:
The region of Dor. Heb. נפתדאר, the region of Dor.   נָפַת דֹּאר.  (תַּרְגּוּם:) פַּלְכֵי דֹאר.
12Baana the son of Ahilud, (to him pertained) Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethana beneath Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-mechola, as far as beyond Jokmeam.   יבבַּֽעֲנָא֙ בֶּן־אֲחִיל֔וּד תַּעְנָ֖ךְ וּמְגִדּ֑וֹ וְכָל־בֵּ֣ית שְׁאָ֡ן אֲשֶׁר֩ אֵ֨צֶל צָרְתָ֜נָה מִתַּ֣חַת לְיִזְרְעֶ֗אל מִבֵּ֚ית שְׁאָן֙ עַד אָבֵ֣ל מְחוֹלָ֔ה עַ֖ד מֵעֵ֥בֶר לְיָקְמְעָֽם:
13The son of Geber, in Ramoth-gilead, to him (pertained) the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; to him (also pertained) the region of Argob which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and brazen bars.   יגבֶּן־גֶּ֖בֶר בְּרָמֹ֣ת גִּלְעָ֑ד ל֡וֹ חַוֹּת֩ יָאִ֨יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּגִּלְעָ֗ד לוֹ חֶ֚בֶל אַרְגֹּב֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּבָּשָׁ֔ן שִׁשִּׁים֙ עָרִ֣ים גְּדֹל֔וֹת חוֹמָ֖ה וּבְרִ֥יחַ נְחֽשֶׁת:
The region of Argob. He was appointed over them to collect the levy of the king, because the rules of the monarchy dictate that his expenditures should be collected from the people, as it is said in the rules of the monarchy in the book of Samuel I (8:11).   חֶבֶל אַרְגֹּב.  מְמֻנֶּה הָיָה עֲלֵיהֶם לִגְבּוֹת מַס הַמֶּלֶךְ, כִּי מִשְׁפַּט הַמֶּלֶךְ יֵשׁ לִגְבּוֹת יְצִיאוֹתָיו מִן הָעָם, כְּמָה שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר בְּמִשְׁפַּט הַמְּלוּכָה בְּסֵפֶר שְׁמוּאֵל.
14Ahinadav the son of Iddo, (was appointed) to Mahanaim.   ידאֲחִֽינָדָ֥ב בֶּן־עִדֹּ֖א מַחֲנָֽיְמָה:
15Achimaaz (was) in Naphtali, also he took Basemath the daughter of Solomon as a wife.   טואֲחִימַ֖עַץ בְּנַפְתָּלִ֑י גַּם־ה֗וּא לָקַ֛ח אֶת־בָּשְׂמַ֥ת בַּת־שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה לְאִשָּֽׁה:
16Baana the son of Hushai (was) in Asher and in Aloth.   טזבַּֽעֲנָא֙ בֶּן־חוּשָׁ֔י בְּאָשֵׁ֖ר וּבְעָלֽוֹת:
17Jehoshaphat the son of Paruach (was) in Issachar.   יזיְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט בֶּן־פָּר֖וּחַ בְּיִשָּׂשכָֽר:
18Shimei the son of Elah, (was) in Benjamin.   יחשִׁמְעִ֥י בֶן־אֵלָ֖א בְּבִנְיָמִֽן:
19Geber the son of Uri (was) in the country of Gilead, (in) the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan, and one officer that was (over all the officers) in the land.   יטגֶּ֥בֶר בֶּן־אֻרִ֖י בְּאֶ֣רֶץ גִּלְעָ֑ד אֶ֜רֶץ סִיח֣וֹן | מֶ֣לֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִ֗י וְעֹג֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַבָּשָׁ֔ן וּנְצִ֥יב אֶחָ֖ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּאָֽרֶץ:
And one officer that was in the land. There is a difference of opinion between Rav and Shmuel. One says, [He was the] one who was appointed over all of them. This was Azariahu the son of Nathan, who was mentioned previously in verse 5, and one says, [To provide the victuals of the king] for the thirteenth month of a Jewish leap year.   וּנְצִיב אֶחָד אֲשֶׁר בָּאָרֶץ.  רַב וּשְׁמוּאֵל פְּלִיגֵי, חַד אָמַר: אֶחָד מְמֻנֶּה עַל כֻּלָּם, הוּא עֲזַרְיָה בֶּן נָתָן הָאָמוּר לְמַעְלָה, וְחַד אָמַר: כְּנֶגֶד חֹדֶשׁ הָעִבּוּר.
20Judah and Israel (were) many, as the sand which (is) by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and rejoicing.   כיְהוּדָ֚ה וְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ רַבִּ֔ים כַּח֥וֹל אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַיָּ֖ם לָרֹ֑ב אֹכְלִ֥ים וְשֹׁתִ֖ים וּשְׂמֵחִֽים:
