| 1And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still confined in the prison yard, saying: |
|
אוַיְהִ֧י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ שֵׁנִ֑ית וְהוּא֙ עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ עָצ֔וּר בַּֽחֲצַ֥ר הַמַּטָּרָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר: |
| confined in the prison. |

עצור
בבית הכלא:
|
| 2So said the Lord, the Maker thereof, Who formed it to prepare it; the Lord is His Name. |
|
בכֹּֽה־אָמַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה עֹשָׂ֑הּ יְהֹוָ֗ה יוֹצֵ֥ר אוֹתָ֛הּ לַֽהֲכִינָ֖הּ יְהֹוָ֥ה שְׁמֽוֹ: |
| So said the Lord, the Maker thereof Who makes this. |
|
כה אמר ה' עשה
העושה זאת:
|
| 3Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and strong things that you do not know. |
|
גקְרָ֥א אֵלַ֖י וְאֶֽעֱנֶ֑ךָּ וְאַגִּ֧ידָה לְּךָ֛ גְּדֹל֥וֹת וּבְצֻר֖וֹת לֹ֥א יְדַעְתָּֽם: |
| Call Me and I will answer you to inform you of future events. |
|
קרא אלי ואענך
להודיעך העתידות:
|
| and strong things laid up in My heart to perform them. |
|
ובצורות
שמורות בלבי לעשותם:
|
| 4For so said the Lord God of Israel concerning the houses of this city and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah that are demolished for the mounds and for the sword. |
|
דכִּי֩ כֹ֨ה אָמַ֚ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַל־בָּתֵּי֙ הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את וְעַל־בָּתֵּ֖י מַלְכֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה הַנְּתֻצִ֕ים אֶל־הַסֹּֽלְל֖וֹת וְאֶל־הֶחָֽרֶב: |
| that are demolished for the mounds To make mounds of them, mounds piled up high which the city dwellers build to ascend the mounds to wage war from upon them with the Chaldeans. |
|
הנתוצים אל הסוללות
לעשות מהם סוללות תלים שצבורים למעלה אשר בונים בני העיר לעלות אל הסוללות להלחם מעליהם אל הכשדים:
|
| and for the sword To strengthen the wall against those who slay with the sword. |
|
ואל החרב
לתקפא שורא מן קדם דקטלין בחרבא:
|
| 5They come to war with the Chaldeans and to fill them with the corpses of the men whom I have smitten with My anger and with My wrath, and that which I have hidden My face from this city because of all their evil. |
|
הבָּאִ֗ים לְהִלָּחֵם֙ אֶת־הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים וּלְמַלְּאָם֙ אֶת־פִּגְרֵ֣י הָֽאָדָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־הִכֵּ֥יתִי בְאַפִּ֖י וּבַֽחֲמָתִ֑י וַֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר הִסְתַּ֚רְתִּי פָנַי֙ מֵהָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את עַ֖ל כָּל־רָֽעָתָֽם: |
| and to fill them with the corpses of the men And the houses that they demolished they make into graves for the corpses of those killed within the city. |
|
ולמלאם את פגרי האדם
ואת הבתים אשר נתצו עושים קברות לפגרים שנהרגים בתוך העיר:
|
| and that which I have hidden, etc. So said the Lord: Behold, I will bring it, etc. |
|
ואשר הסתרתי וגו'
כה אמר ה' הנני מעלה לה וגו':
|
| 6Behold, I will bring it healing and cure, and I will cure them, and I will reveal to them a greeting of peace and truth. |
|
והִֽנְנִ֧י מַֽעֲלֶה־לָּ֛הּ אֲרֻכָ֥ה וּמַרְפֵּ֖א וּרְפָאתִ֑ם וְגִלֵּיתִ֣י לָהֶ֔ם עֲתֶ֥רֶת שָׁל֖וֹם וֶאֱמֶֽת: |
| a greeting of peace a blessing (salud in O.F., salut in modern French), a greeting. |
|
עתרת שלום
ברכת שלום שלוד בלע"ז:
|
| 7And I will return the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel, and build them up like at first. |
|
זוַֽהֲשִֽׁבֹתִי֙ אֶת־שְׁב֣וּת יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאֵ֖ת שְׁב֣וּת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּבְנִתִ֖ים כְּבָרִֽאשֹׁנָֽה: |
| 8And I will purify them of all their iniquity that they sinned against Me, and I will forgive all their iniquities that they sinned against Me and that they rebelled against Me. |
|
חוְטִ֣הַרְתִּ֔ים מִכָּל־עֲוֹנָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָֽטְאוּ־לִ֑י וְסָלַחְתִּ֗י לְכָל־ (כתיב לְכָול) עֲוֹנֽוֹתֵיהֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָֽטְאוּ־לִ֔י וַֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר פָּ֥שְׁעוּ בִֽי: |
| 9And it shall be to Me for a name of joy, for praise and for glory to all the nations of the earth who will hear all the good that I do for them and fear and tremble because of all the good and because of all the peace that I do for it. |
|
טוְהָ֣יְתָה לִּ֔י לְשֵׁ֚ם שָׂשׂוֹן֙ לִתְהִלָּ֣ה וּלְתִפְאֶ֔רֶת לְכֹ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁמְע֜וּ אֶת־כָּל־הַטּוֹבָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֚ר אָֽנֹכִי֙ עֹשֶׂ֣ה אוֹתָ֔ם וּפָֽחֲד֣וּ וְרָֽגְז֗וּ עַ֚ל כָּל־הַטּוֹבָה֙ וְעַ֣ל כָּל־הַשָּׁל֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָֽנֹכִ֖י עֹ֥שֶׂה לָּֽהּ: |
| 10So said the Lord: There shall again be heard in this place, concerning which you say, "It is desolate without man and without beast," in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate without a man and without an inhabitant and without a beast, |
|
יכֹּ֣ה | אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֗ה עוֹד֘ יִשָּׁמַ֣ע בַּמָּקֽוֹם־הַזֶּה֒ אֲשֶׁר֙ אַתֶּ֣ם אֹֽמְרִ֔ים חָרֵ֣ב ה֔וּא מֵאֵ֥ין אָדָ֖ם וּמֵאֵ֣ין בְּהֵמָ֑ה בְּעָרֵ֚י יְהוּדָה֙ וּבְחֻצ֣וֹת יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם הַֽנְשַׁמּ֗וֹת מֵאֵ֥ין אָדָ֛ם וּמֵאֵ֥ין יוֹשֵׁ֖ב וּמֵאֵ֥ין בְּהֵמָֽה: |
| 11the sound of mirth and the sound of joy, the voice of a bridegroom and the voice of a bride, the sound of those saying, "Thank the Lord of Hosts, for the Lord is good, for His loving-kindness endures forever," bringing a thanksgiving offering to the House of the Lord, for I will restore the captivity of the land as at first, said the Lord. |

יאק֣וֹל שָׂשׂ֞וֹן וְק֣וֹל שִׂמְחָ֗ה ק֣וֹל חָתָן֘ וְק֣וֹל כַּלָּה֒ ק֣וֹל אֹֽמְרִ֡ים הוֹדוּ֩ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת כִּֽי־ט֚וֹב יְהֹוָה֙ כִּֽי־לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּ֔וֹ מְבִאִ֥ים תּוֹדָ֖ה בֵּ֣ית יְהֹוָ֑ה כִּֽי־אָשִׁ֧יב אֶת־שְׁבֽוּת־הָאָ֛רֶץ כְּבָרִֽאשֹׁנָ֖ה אָמַ֥ר יְהֹוָֽה: |
| 12So said the Lord of Hosts: There shall again be in this place that is waste without man or beast, and in all its cities a dwelling of shepherds resting [their] flocks. |
|
יבכֹּֽה־אָמַר֘ יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ ע֞וֹד יִֽהְיֶ֣ה | בַּמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֗ה הֶֽחָרֵ֛ב מֵאֵֽין־אָדָ֥ם וְעַד־בְּהֵמָ֖ה וּבְכָל־עָרָ֑יו נְוֵ֣ה רֹעִ֔ים מַרְבִּצִ֖ים צֹֽאן: |
| a dwelling of shepherds Heb. נְוֵה רֹעִים. |
|
נוה רועים
מדור רועים:
|
| 13In the cities of the mountain, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the Negev and in the land of Benjamin and in the environs of Jerusalem and in the cities of Judah, flocks shall again pass under the hands of one who counts them, said the Lord. |
|
יגבְּעָרֵ֨י הָהָ֜ר בְּעָרֵ֚י הַשְּׁפֵלָה֙ וּבְעָרֵ֣י הַנֶּ֔גֶב וּבְאֶ֧רֶץ בִּנְיָמִ֛ן וּבִסְבִיבֵ֥י יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וּבְעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה עֹ֣ד תַּֽעֲבֹ֧רְנָה הַצֹּ֛אן עַל־יְדֵ֥י מוֹנֶ֖ה אָמַ֥ר יְהֹוָֽה: |
| flocks shall again pass, etc. Israel will come and go under the hands of a king who walks at their head. |
|
עוד תעבורנה הצאן וגו'
יצאו ויבאו ישראל ע"י מנהיג הולך בראשם:
|
| 14Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, and I will establish the good thing that I spoke concerning the house of Israel and the house of Judah. |
|
ידהִנֵּ֛ה יָמִ֥ים בָּאִ֖ים נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה וַֽהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַטּ֔וֹב אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֛רְתִּי אֶל־בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְעַל־בֵּ֥ית יְהוּדָֽה: |
| 15In those days and in that time I will cause to grow for David a plant of righteousness, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. |
|
טובַּיָּמִ֚ים הָהֵם֙ וּבָעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔יא אַצְמִ֥יחַ לְדָוִ֖ד צֶ֣מַח צְדָקָ֑ה וְעָשָׂ֛ה מִשְׁפָּ֥ט וּצְדָקָ֖ה בָּאָֽרֶץ: |
| 16In those days, Judah shall be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell securely and this is the name that He shall call it, the Lord is our righteousness. |
|
טזבַּיָּמִ֚ים הָהֵם֙ תִּוָּשַׁ֣ע יְהוּדָ֔ה וִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם תִּשְׁכּ֣וֹן לָבֶ֑טַח וְזֶ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־יִקְרָא־לָ֖הּ יְהֹוָ֥ה | צִדְקֵֽנוּ: |
| 17For so said the Lord: There shall not be cut off from David a man sitting on the throne of the house of Israel. |
|
יזכִּי־כֹ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה לֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֣ת לְדָוִ֔ד אִ֕ישׁ ישֵׁ֖ב עַל־כִּסֵּ֥א בֵֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
| There shall not be cut off permanently, but if it is discontinued, it will ultimately be reinstated. |
|
לא יכרת
כריתות עולם אלא אם יפסוק סופו לחזור:
|
| 18And of the Levitic priests, there shall not be cut off from before Me a man offering up a burnt offering, or burning a meal-offering or performing a sacrifice for all time. |
|
יחוְלַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ הַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם לֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֥ת אִ֖ישׁ מִלְּפָנָ֑י מַֽעֲלֶ֨ה עוֹלָ֜ה וּמַקְטִ֥יר מִנְחָ֛ה וְעֹ֥שֶׂה זֶּ֖בַח כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים: |
| for all time There shall not be cut off from them seed fit to offer up a burnt-offering or to burn a meal-offering. |
|
כל הימים
לא יכרת להם זרע הראוי להעלות עולה ולהקטיר מנחה:
|
| 19And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: |
|
יטוַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ לֵאמֽוֹר: |
| 20So said the Lord: If you break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, and not to have day and night in their time. |
|
ככֹּה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אִם־תָּפֵ֙רוּ֙ אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וְאֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י הַלָּ֑יְלָה וּלְבִלְתִּ֛י הֱי֥וֹת יוֹמָֽם־וָלַ֖יְלָה בְּעִתָּֽם: |
| If you break My covenant with the day If you can break My covenant that I formed with the day and with the night to be in their time, which I formed with Noah and his sons, “And day and night shall not cease” (Gen. 8:22). |
|
אם תפרו את בריתי היום
אם תוכלו להפר את בריתי אשר כרתי את היום ואת הלילה להיותם בעתם אשר כרתי לנח ובניו ויום ולילה לא ישבותו:

| 21Also My covenant with David shall be broken, that he should not have a son reigning on his throne, and with the Levitic priests, My ministers. |
|
כאגַּם־בְּרִיתִ֚י תֻפַר֙ אֶת־דָּוִ֣ד עַבְדִּ֔י מִֽהְיוֹת־ל֥וֹ בֵ֖ן מֹלֵ֣ךְ עַל־כִּסְא֑וֹ וְאֶת־הַלְוִיִּ֥ם הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים מְשָֽׁרְתָֽי: |
| 22Just as the host of heaven cannot be counted nor can the sand of the sea be measured, so will I increase the seed of My servant David and the Levites who minister to Me. |
|
כבאֲשֶׁ֚ר לֹֽא־יִסָּפֵר֙ צְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְלֹ֥א יִמַּ֖ד ח֣וֹל הַיָּ֑ם כֵּ֣ן אַרְבֶּ֗ה אֶת־זֶ֙רַע֙ דָּוִ֣ד עַבְדִּ֔י וְאֶת־הַֽלְוִיִּ֖ם מְשָֽׁרְתֵ֥י אֹתִֽי: |
| 23And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: |
|
כגוַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 24Have you not seen what this people has spoken saying: The two families that God chose, He has rejected, and they make My people despise being a nation any longer before them. |
|
כדהֲל֣וֹא רָאִ֗יתָ מָֽה־הָעָ֚ם הַזֶּה֙ דִּבְּר֣וּ לֵאמֹ֔ר שְׁתֵּ֣י הַמִּשְׁפָּח֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּחַ֧ר יְהֹוָ֛ה בָּהֶ֖ם וַיִּמְאָסֵ֑ם וְאֶת־עַמִּי֙ יִנְאָצ֔וּן מִֽהְי֥וֹת ע֖וֹד גּ֥וֹי לִפְנֵיהֶֽם: |
| The two families Viz. royalty and the priesthood. |
|
שתי המשפחות
המלכות והכהונה:
|
| and they make My people despise And with these words, they cause My people to despise being a nation to Me. |
|
ואת עמי ינאצון
ובדברים האלה הם גורמים לעמי לנאץ מהיות גוי לי:
|
| before them According to these words of theirs, that they teach them to say that the Holy One, blessed be He, will no longer return from His anger, and repentance will not avail them. |
|
לפניהם
לפני דבריהם אלה שמלמדין אותן לומר לא ישוב הקב"ה מחרונו עוד ולא תועיל לכם תשובה:
|
| 25So said the Lord: If not My covenant with the day and the night, that the statutes of heaven and earth I did not place, |
|
כהכֹּה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אִם־לֹ֥א בְרִיתִ֖י יוֹמָ֣ם וָלָ֑יְלָה חֻקּ֛וֹת שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָ֖רֶץ לֹא־שָֽׂמְתִּי: |
| If not My covenant, etc. If it is possible that the covenant that I formed with day and night to be in their time should be abolished, and if it is possible for the statutes of heaven and earth to be abolished as though I had not placed them, also the seed of Jacob, etc. Our Sages, however, expounded it in regard to the covenant of the Torah and circumcision, to derive from here that because of them heaven and earth were created. But this Midrash does not fit the sequence of the verses. |

אם לא בריתי וגו'
אי אפשר שלא יתקיים הברית שכרתי ליום ולילה להיות בעתם ואי אפשר לחוקות שמים וארץ ליבטל כאלו לא שמתים גם זרע יעקב וגו' ורבותינו דרשוהו לענין ברית התורה ללמוד מכאן שבשביל התורה נבראו שמים וארץ אך אין המדרש מיושב על סדר המקראות:

| 26Also will I reject the seed of Jacob and David, My servant, not to take from his seed rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, when I bring back their captivity and have mercy upon them. |
|
כוגַּם־זֶ֣רַע יַֽ֠עֲקוֹב וְדָוִ֨ד עַבְדִּ֜י אֶמְאַ֗ס מִקַּ֚חַת מִזַּרְעוֹ֙ מֹֽשְׁלִ֔ים אֶל־זֶ֥רַע אַבְרָהָ֖ם יִשְׂחָ֣ק וְיַֽעֲקֹ֑ב כִּֽי־אָשִׁ֥יב (כתיב אָשִׁ֥וב) אֶת־שְׁבוּתָ֖ם וְרִֽחַמְתִּֽים: |
