| 1On that day the Book of Moses was read in the ears of the people, and it was found written therein that an Ammonite and a Moabite may not enter the congregation of God forever. |

אבַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא נִקְרָ֛א בְּסֵ֥פֶר מֹשֶׁ֖ה בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וְנִמְצָא֙ כָּת֣וּב בּ֔וֹ אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹא־יָב֨וֹא עַמֹּנִ֧י וּמֹאָבִ֛י בִּקְהַ֥ל הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים עַד־עוֹלָֽם: |
| 2For they did not come forward to meet the Children of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them; but our God turned the curse into a blessing. |
|
בכִּ֣י לֹ֧א קִדְּמ֛וּ אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּלֶּ֣חֶם וּבַמָּ֑יִם וַיִּשְׂכֹּ֨ר עָלָ֚יו אֶת־בִּלְעָם֙ לְקַלְל֔וֹ וַיַּֽהֲפֹ֧ךְ אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ הַקְּלָלָ֖ה לִבְרָכָֽה: |
| 3Now it came to pass when they heard the Torah, that they separated all mixtures from Israel. |
|
גוַיְהִ֖י כְּשָׁמְעָ֣ם אֶת־הַתּוֹרָ֑ה וַיַּבְדִּ֥ילוּ כָל־עֵ֖רֶב מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
| all mixtures: Every mixture of heathens, like (Exodus 12:38): “A great mixed multitude (עֵרֶב רַב) also went up with them.” |

| 4Now prior to this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed to the chamber of the Temple of our God, was a kinsman of Tobiah. |

דוְלִפְנֵ֣י מִזֶּ֔ה אֶלְיָשִׁיב֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן נָת֖וּן בְּלִשְׁכַּ֣ת בֵּֽית־אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ קָר֖וֹב לְטוֹבִיָּֽה: |

| was a kinsman of Tobiah: Eliashib the priest was a kinsman of Tobiah the companion of Sanballat, and the priest placed Tobiah’s vessels there. |

| 5And he had made him a large chamber, and in previous times they would put there the meal offering, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithe of the corn, the wine, and the oil, which were ordained for the Levites and the singers and the gate sentries, and the heave offering of the priests. |
|
הוַיַּ֨עַשׂ ל֜וֹ לִשְׁכָּ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֗ה וְשָׁ֣ם הָי֪וּ לְפָנִ֠֩ים נֹֽ֠תְנִים אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֨ה הַלְּבוֹנָ֜ה וְהַכֵּלִ֗ים וּמַעְשַׂ֚ר הַדָּגָן֙ הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ וְהַיִּצְהָ֔ר מִצְוַת֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְהַֽמְשֹֽׁרְרִ֖ים וְהַשֹּֽׁעֲרִ֑ים וּתְרוּמַ֖ת הַכֹּֽהֲנִֽים: |
| And he made: Eliashib [made]. |

| 6Now with all this, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king of Babylon, I came to the king, and after some days, I requested of the king. |

ווּבְכָל־זֶ֕ה לֹ֥א הָיִ֖יתִי בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כִּ֡י בִּשְׁנַת֩ שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים וּשְׁתַּ֜יִם לְאַרְתַּחְשַׁ֚סְתְּא מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶל֙ בָּ֣אתִי אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וּלְקֵ֥ץ יָמִ֖ים נִשְׁאַ֥לְתִּי מִן־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ: |
| Now with all this: during this entire episode. |

| I came to the king: when I returned to Babylon. |
|

| I requested of the king: to give me permission to go up and to return to Jerusalem. |

| 7And I came to Jerusalem, and I pondered the evil that Eliashib had done in the matter of Tobiah, by making him a chamber in the courts of the Temple of God. |
|
זוָֽאָב֖וֹא לִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וָֽאָבִ֣ינָה בָֽרָעָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֚ה אֶלְיָשִׁיב֙ לְט֣וֹבִיָּ֔ה לַֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת לוֹ֙ נִשְׁכָּ֔ה בְּחַצְרֵ֖י בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים: |
| 8And I was very distressed, and I cast all the vessels of Tobiah's house out of the chamber. |
|
חוַיֵּ֥רַע לִ֖י מְאֹ֑ד וָֽאַשְׁלִ֜יכָה אֶת־כָּל־כְּלֵ֧י בֵית־טֽוֹבִיָּ֛ה הַח֖וּץ מִן־הַלִּשְׁכָּֽה: |
| 9And I commanded, and they purified the chambers, and I returned there the vessels of the Temple of God, the meal offerings, and the frankincense. |
|
טוָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה וַיְטַֽהֲר֖וּ הַלְּשָׁכ֑וֹת וָֽאָשִׁ֣יבָה שָּׁ֗ם כְּלֵי֙ בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֖ה וְהַלְּבֹנָֽה: |
| And I commanded: I commanded to purify it, and they purified the chambers, etc. |
|
ואומרה:
צויתי לטהר ויטהרו הלשכות וגומר:
|
| 10And I knew that the portions due the Levites had not been given, and the Levites and the singers who did the work fled each one to his field. |
|
יוָאֵ֣דְעָ֔ה כִּֽי־מְנָי֥וֹת הַלְוִיִּ֖ם לֹ֣א נִתָּ֑נָה וַיִּבְרְח֧וּ אִישׁ־לְשָׂדֵ֛הוּ הַלְוִיִּ֥ם וְהַמְשֹֽׁרְרִ֖ים עֹשֵׂ֥י הַמְּלָאכָֽה: |

| had not been given: that the Israelites had not placed the gifts there, and because of that they fled and wandered here and there to ask for their gifts, and were not occupied as much with their service. |

לא נתנה:
שלא נתנו ישראל שם המתנות ועל כן ברחו והלכו להם אנה ואנה לשאול מתנותיהם ולא היו עוסקים כל כך בעבודתם:
|
| 11So I quarreled with the prefects, and I said, "Why has the Temple of God been forsaken?" And I gathered them and stationed them in their place. |
|
יאוָֽאָרִ֙יבָה֙ אֶת־הַסְּגָנִ֔ים וָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה מַדּ֖וּעַ נֶעֱזַ֣ב בֵּית־הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וָֽאֶ֨קְבְּצֵ֔ם וָאַֽעֲמִדֵ֖ם עַל־עָמְדָֽם: |
| And I gathered them: I gathered the priests and the Levites to station them on their watches in their service, and all of Israel brought them their gifts there. |
|
ואקבצם:
קבצתי את הכהנים והלוים להעמידם על משמרתם בעבודתם וכל ישראל היו מביאים להם שם מתנותם:
|
| 12And all of Judah brought the tithes of the corn, and the wine, and the oil to the treasuries. |
|
יבוְכָל־יְהוּדָ֗ה הֵבִ֜יאוּ מַעְשַׂ֧ר הַדָּגָ֛ן וְהַתִּיר֥וֹשׁ וְהַיִּצְהָ֖ר לָאֽוֹצָרֽוֹת: |
| 13And I appointed treasurers over the treasuries: Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, for they were deemed trustworthy, and it was incumbent upon them to distribute to their brethren. |
|
יגוָאֽוֹצְרָ֣ה עַל־א֠וֹצָרוֹת שֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֨ה הַכֹּהֵ֜ן וְצָד֣וֹק הַסּוֹפֵ֗ר וּפְדָיָה֙ מִן־הַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם וְעַ֨ל־יָדָ֔ם חָנָ֥ן בֶּן־זַכּ֖וּר בֶּן־מַתַּנְיָ֑ה כִּ֚י נֶֽאֱמָנִים֙ נֶחְשָׁ֔בוּ וַֽעֲלֵיהֶ֖ם לַֽחֲלֹ֥ק לַֽאֲחֵיהֶֽם: |
| for they were deemed trustworthy: to distribute the gifts among them [the Levites]. |
|

היו לחלוק המתנות ביניהם:

| 14Remember me, my God, concerning this, and do not erase my good deeds that I did in the Temple of my God and with its watches. |
|
ידזָכְרָה־לִּ֥י אֱלֹהַ֖י עַל־זֹ֑את וְאַל־תֶּ֣מַח חֲסָדַ֗י אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֛יתִי בְּבֵ֥ית אֱלֹהַ֖י וּבְמִשְׁמָרָֽיו: |
| 15In those days, I saw in Judea [people] treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing stacks [of grain] and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, and figs, and all types of loads and bringing them to Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, and I warned them on the day they sold provisions. |
|
טובַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֡מָּה רָאִ֣יתִי בִֽיהוּדָ֣ה | דֹּֽרְכִ֣ים גִּתּ֣וֹת | בַּשַּׁבָּ֡ת וּמְבִיאִ֣ים הָֽעֲרֵמ֣וֹת וְעֹֽמְסִ֪ים עַל־הַֽחֲמֹרִ֠֩ים וְאַף־יַ֜יִן עֲנָבִ֚ים וּתְאֵנִים֙ וְכָל־מַשָּׂ֔א וּמְבִיאִ֥ים יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם בְּי֣וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת וָֽאָעִ֕יד בְּי֖וֹם מִכְרָ֥ם צָֽיִד: |
| the stacks: sheaves of grain. |

הערמות:
אלומות של תבואה:

| and I warned: I warned them not to do it. |
|
ואעיד:
העידותי בהם שלא לעשות:
|
| on the day they sold provisions: On the day they were selling food and provisions. צָיִד, provisions, as (Gen. 45:21): “… and he gave them provision (צֵדָה) for the way.” |
|
ביום מכרם ציד:
ביום שהיו מוכרים מזון וציד, ציד כמו ויתן להם צידה לדרך (בראשית מ"ח):
|
| 16And the Tyrians [who] sojourned there were bringing fish and all [types of] merchandise and selling on the Sabbath to the people of Judea and in Jerusalem. |
|
טזוְהַצֹּרִים֙ יָ֣שְׁבוּ בָ֔הּ מְבִיאִ֥ים דָּ֖ג (כתיב דָּ֖אג) וְכָל־מֶ֑כֶר וּמוֹכְרִ֧ים בַּשַּׁבָּ֛ת לִבְנֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה וּבִירֽוּשָׁלִָֽם: |
| and the Tyrian: Merchants of Tyre would bring fish to sell. |
|
והצורים:
סוחרים של צור מביאים דגים למכור:
|
| 17And I quarreled with the dignitaries of Judea, and I said to them, "What is this bad thing that you are doing-profaning the Sabbath day? |
|
יזוָאָרִ֕יבָה אֵ֖ת חֹרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וָאֹֽמְרָ֣ה לָהֶ֗ם מָֽה־הַדָּבָ֨ר הָרָ֚ע הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּ֣ם עֹשִׂ֔ים וּמְחַלְּלִ֖ים אֶת־י֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּֽת: |
| 18Did not your ancestors do this, and our God brought upon us all this calamity, and upon this city, and you are increasing the wrath upon Israel by profaning the Sabbath?" |
|
יחהֲל֨וֹא כֹ֚ה עָשׂוּ֙ אֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם וַיָּבֵ֨א אֱלֹהֵ֜ינוּ עָלֵ֗ינוּ אֵת כָּל־הָרָעָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וְעַ֖ל הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֑את וְאַתֶּ֞ם מֽוֹסִיפִ֚ים חָרוֹן֙ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְחַלֵּ֖ל אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּֽת: |
| 19Now it came to pass when the gates of Jerusalem cast shadows before the Sabbath, that I commanded, and the doors were closed, and I said that they should not open them until after the Sabbath, and I stationed some of my youths over the gates so that no load should enter on the Sabbath day. |
|
יטוַיְהִ֡י כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר צָֽלְלוּ֩ שַֽׁעֲרֵ֨י יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֜ם לִפְנֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֗ת וָאֹֽמְרָה֙ וַיִּסָּגְר֣וּ הַדְּלָת֔וֹת וָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א יִפְתָּח֔וּם עַ֖ד אַחַ֣ר הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת וּמִנְּעָרַ֗י הֶֽעֱמַ֙דְתִּי֙ עַל־הַשְּׁעָרִ֔ים לֹא־יָב֥וֹא מַשָּׂ֖א בְּי֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּֽת: |
| Now it came to pass when the gates of Jerusalem cast shadows: When the shadows of the Sabbath eve fell on the gates, I ordered the doors of the city to be closed and not re-opened until after the Sabbath so that the traffickers would not enter the city to sell their merchandise and cause Israel to profane the Sabbath. |
|
ויהי כאשר צללו:
כאשר נטו הצללים של ערב שבת בשערים צויתי לסגור דלתות העיר שלא יפתחו עד אחר שבת שלא יבואו הרוכלים בעיר למכור סחורתן כדי שלא יחללו ישראל את השבת על ידיהם:
|
| 20So the traffickers and the vendors of all types of merchandise lodged outside Jerusalem once and twice. |
|
כוַיָּלִ֨ינוּ הָרֹֽכְלִ֜ים וּמֹֽכְרֵ֧י כָל־מִמְכָּ֛ר מִח֥וּץ לִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֖ם פַּ֥עַם וּשְׁתָּֽיִם: |
| So… lodged: The traffickers and the merchants lodged outside Jerusalem on the Sabbath once and twice so that the Children of Israel would open the gates and buy from them on the Sabbath. |
|
וילינו:
והיו לנים הרוכלים והסוחרים ביום השבת מחוץ לירושלים פעם א' ושתי פעמים כדי שיבואו בני ישראל לפתוח השערים ולקנות מהם בשבת:
|
| 21And I warned them and said to them, "Why are you lodging opposite the wall? If you repeat [this], I shall lay a hand on you." Since that time, they did not come on the Sabbath. |
|
כאוָֽאָעִ֣ידָה בָהֶ֗ם וָאֹֽמְרָ֚ה אֲלֵיהֶם֙ מַדּ֜וּעַ אַתֶּ֚ם לֵנִים֙ נֶ֣גֶד הַחוֹמָ֔ה אִם־תִּשְׁנ֕וּ יָ֖ד אֶשְׁלַ֣ח בָּכֶ֑ם מִן־הָעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔יא לֹא־בָ֖אוּ בַּשַּׁבָּֽת: |
| and I said to them: I warned those traffickers. |
|
ואומרה אליהם:
התריתי באותם הרוכלים:
|
| If you repeat this: if you continue to do this a second time. |
|
אם תשנו:
אם תוסיפו לעשות פעם שנייה:
|
| Since that time: From that day on, they did not come on the Sabbath day. |
|
מן העת:
מן אותו יום והלאה לא באו ביום השבת:
|
| 22And I commanded the Levites that the watchers of the walls should purify themselves and come to hallow the Sabbath day. This too remember for me, my God, and have pity on me according to Your abundant loving-kindness. |
|
כבוָאֹֽמְרָ֣ה לַֽלְוִיִּ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִֽהְי֚וּ מִטַּֽהֲרִים֙ וּבָאִים֙ שֹֽׁמְרִ֣ים הַשְּׁעָרִ֔ים לְקַדֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־י֣וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת גַּם־זֹאת֙ זָכְרָה־לִּ֣י אֱלֹהַ֔י וְח֥וּסָה עָלַ֖י כְּרֹ֥ב חַסְדֶּֽךָ: |
| 23Also in those days, I saw the Jews who had married Ashdodite, Ammonite, and Moabite women. |
|
כגגַּ֣ם | בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֗ם רָאִ֚יתִי אֶת־הַיְּהוּדִים֙ הֹשִׁ֚יבוּ נָשִׁים֙ אַשְׁדֳּדִיּ֔וֹת (כתיב אַשְׁדֳּודִיּ֔וֹת) עַמֳּנִיּ֖וֹת (כתיב עַמֳּונִיּ֖וֹת) מֽוֹאֲבִיּֽוֹת: |
| who had married: who had married heathen wives. |
|
הושיבו נשים:
אשר נשאו להם נשים של עכו"ם:
|
| 24And half their children were speaking Ashdodite, and they did not know how to speak Hebrew, and [so it was] with the language of every people. |
|
כדוּבְנֵיהֶ֗ם חֲצִי֙ מְדַבֵּ֣ר אַשְׁדּוֹדִ֔ית וְאֵינָ֥ם מַכִּירִ֖ים לְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהוּדִ֑ית וְכִלְשׁ֖וֹן עַ֥ם וָעָֽם: |
| And half… were speaking: Many of their children spoke the Ashdodite language like their mothers. |
|
חצי מדבר:
הרבה מבניהם היו מדברים לשון אשדודי' כאמותם:
|
| 25And I quarreled with them, and I cursed them, and I struck some of them, and I plucked out their hair, and I adjured them by God, "You shall not give your daughters to their sons nor take their daughters either for your sons or for yourselves. |
|
כהוָֽאָרִ֚יב עִמָּם֙ וָֽאֲקַֽלְלֵ֔ם וָאַכֶּ֥ה מֵהֶ֛ם אֲנָשִׁ֖ים וָֽאֶמְרְטֵ֑ם וָֽאַשְׁבִּיעֵ֣ם בֵּֽאלֹהִ֗ים אִם־תִּתְּנ֚וּ בְנֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ לִבְנֵיהֶ֔ם וְאִם־תִּשְׂאוּ֙ מִבְּנֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם לִבְנֵיכֶ֖ם וְלָכֶֽם: |
| and I struck: I gave them lashes in order to chastise them and remind them. |
|
ואכה:
נתתי להם מלקיות להלקותם כדי להוכיחם ולהזכירם:
|
| 26Did not Solomon the king of Israel sin with these, although there was no king like him among the great nations, beloved by his God, Who appointed him king over all Israel? The foreign women caused even him to sin. |
|
כוהֲל֣וֹא עַל־אֵ֣לֶּה חָטָֽא־שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל וּבַגּוֹיִ֣ם הָֽרַבִּים֩ לֹֽא־הָיָ֨ה מֶ֜לֶךְ כָּמֹ֗הוּ וְאָה֚וּב לֵֽאלֹהָיו֙ הָיָ֔ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֣הוּ אֱלֹהִ֔ים מֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל גַּם־אוֹת֣וֹ הֶֽחֱטִ֔יאוּ הַנָּשִׁ֖ים הַנָּכְרִיּֽוֹת: |
| caused him even to sin: If he sinned, how much more so is it certain that you will sin through your heathen wives! As is written in the next verse, “Shall we hearken, etc.?” i.e., Solomon was found sinning through his heathen wives, and you have married foreign wives in order to sin? |
|
גם אותו החטיאו:
כל שכן שתהיו חוטאים ע"י נשיכם של עכו"ם וזהו שנאמר בסמוך ולכם הנשמע וגו' בתמיה כלומר שלמה מלך ישראל נמצא חטא על ידי נשי' של עכו"ם ואתם נשאתם נשים של עכו"ם להיות חוטאין:

| 27Shall we then hearken to you to do all this great evil to betray our God to marry foreign women?" |
|
כזוְלָכֶ֣ם הֲנִשְׁמַ֗ע לַֽעֲשֹׂת֙ אֵ֣ת כָּל־הָרָעָ֚ה הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את לִמְעֹ֖ל בֵּֽאלֹהֵ֑ינוּ לְהֹשִׁ֖יב נָשִׁ֥ים נָכְרִיּֽוֹת: |
| 28And [one] of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the High Priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite, and I drove him away from me. |
|
כחוּמִבְּנֵ֨י יֽוֹיָדָ֚ע בֶּן־אֶלְיָשִׁיב֙ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּד֔וֹל חָתָ֖ן לְסַנְבַלַּ֣ט הַחֹֽרֹנִ֑י וָֽאַבְרִיחֵ֖הוּ מֵֽעָלָֽי: |
| And [one] of the sons of Joiada… was the son in law of Sanballat: One of the sons of Joiada was the son-in-law of Sanballat, the adversary of the Jews; thus, I drove him away from me so that he should not frequent Jerusalem because of his son-in-law, to see the city and the ways to enter and leave it. |
|
ומבני יוידע:
חתן לסנבלט אחד מבני יוידע חתן לסנבלט צורר היהודים והברחתיהו מעלי למען לא יהיה רגיל בירושלים בשביל חתנו לראות את העיר ואת מוצאיה ואת מובאיה:

| 29Remember them, my God, that they defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites. |
|
כטזָכְרָ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם אֱלֹהָ֑י עַל גָּֽאֳלֵ֣י הַכְּהֻנָּ֔ה וּבְרִ֥ית הַכְּהֻנָּ֖ה וְהַֽלְוִיִּֽם: |
| Remember them: the good that they did. |

זכרה להם:
הטובה אשר עשו:
|
| 30But I purified them of everything alien, and I appointed watches of the priests and of the Levites, each one in his work. |
|
לוְטִֽהַרְתִּ֖ים מִכָּל־נֵכָ֑ר וָאַֽעֲמִ֧ידָה מִשְׁמָר֛וֹת לַכֹּֽהֲנִ֥ים וְלַֽלְוִיִּ֖ם אִ֥ישׁ בִּמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ: |
| 31And concerning the wood offering at appointed times and concerning the first-fruits, remember for me, my God, favorably. |

לאוּלְקֻרְבַּ֧ן הָֽעֵצִ֛ים בְּעִתִּ֥ים מְזֻמָּנ֖וֹת וְלַבִּכּוּרִ֑ים זָכְרָה־לִּ֥י אֱלֹהַ֖י לְטוֹבָֽה: |
| at appointed times: They would cut wood for the altar pyre at appointed times. |

לעתים היו כורתים עצים למערכה:

| and concerning the first fruits: that they should bring the first fruits at a certain time; for each species I appointed its time. |
