Bringing the Torah and Jewish Outreach to Gitmo Military Base

Col. Jacob Goldstein, an Army chaplain and reportedly the only member of the U.S. armed services sporting a full-length beard, recently returned from a month serving Jewish soldiers stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A Chabad-Lubavitch rabbi, Goldstein, 60, took a Torah with him from New York; he led High Holiday services at the military installation and erected two sukkahs, in addition to catering to the spiritual needs of the military’s personnel.

Known by the military as Gitmo, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, sits on a stunning part of the island and looks out into the Caribbean Sea. With the arrival of Col. Rabbi Jacob Goldstein last month, it became a hub for Jewish activities during the High Holidays, Sukkot and Simchat Torah.
