Holocaust-Era Torah Scrolls Dedicated in Dnepropetrovsk
May 28, 2008
The historic Golden Rose synagogue in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, dedicated two Torah scrolls salvaged from the horrors of the Holocaust. In a grand celebration broadcast on the local news, Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetzki, the city’s chief rabbi, heralded the arrival of the scrolls as “a special blessing” for the city’s Jewish community. One of the scrolls was discovered in 2006 in the village of Dobrovelychkivka, whose Jews were wiped out by Nazi forces; the other came by way of China, carried there by Jews fleeing Slonim, Belarus, in 1941. Both were restored by scribes in Israel.
