Children of Chernobyl Completes 81st Airlift

June 25, 2008
A delegation from the central Israeli village of Kfar Chabad welcomed 16 new children to Israel as part of the Children of Chernobyl program. The Sunday arrival was the conclusion of Children of Chernobyl’s 81st airlift from areas stricken with radiation fallout associated with the 1986 nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine. On hand for the ceremony was Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Aharonov, director of the Chabad-Lubavitch Youth Organization in Israel, which sponsors Children of Chernobyl. Since the program’s founding in 1989, some 2,514 children have been brought to Israel to live. (Photos: Michael Frayden/Chabad.org.il)
