Chapter 19

1And it was when king Hezekiah heard that he rent his garments, and covered himself with sackcloth, and came to the house of the Lord.   אוַיְהִ֗י כִּשְׁמֹ֙עַ֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ וַיִּקְרַ֖ע אֶת־בְּגָדָ֑יו וַיִּתְכַּ֣ס בַּשָּׂ֔ק וַיָּבֹ֖א בֵּ֥ית יְהֹוָֽה:
2And he sent Eliakim who was appointed over the palace, and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz.   בוַ֠יִּשְׁלַח אֶת־אֶלְיָקִ֨ים אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַבַּ֜יִת וְשֶׁבְנָ֣א הַסֹּפֵ֗ר וְאֵת֙ זִקְנֵ֣י הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֔ים מִתְכַּסִּ֖ים בַּשַּׂקִּ֑ים אֶל־יְשַֽׁעְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא בֶּן־אָמֽוֹץ:
3And they said to him, "So has Hezekiah said, 'This day is a day of distress, debate, and blasphemy, for the children have come as far as the birthstool and there is no strength to give birth.   גוַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּה אָמַ֣ר חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ יוֹם־צָרָ֧ה וְתוֹכֵחָ֛ה וּנְאָצָ֖ה הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֣י בָ֚אוּ בָנִים֙ עַד־מַשְׁבֵּ֔ר וְכֹ֥חַ אַ֖יִן לְלֵדָֽה:
and debate that the wicked are debating and showing evidence to their words, saying, “We have power and strength.”   וְתוֹכֵחָה  שֶׁהָרְשָׁעִים מִתְוַכְּחִין וּמַרְאִין פָּנִים לְדִבְרֵיהֶם, לֵאמֹר לָנוּ הַכֹּחַ וְהַגְּבוּרָה.
children Israel.   בָנִים  יִשְׂרָאֵל.
as far as the birthstool as far as a distress analogous to a woman sitting on the birthstool, and she has no strength to give birth. [The Hebrew is] מַשְׁבֵּר - the name of the seat used by a woman who kneels to give birth.   עַד מַשְׁבֵּר  עַד צָרָה הַדּוֹמָה לְאִשָּׁה יוֹשֶׁבֶת עַל מַשְׁבֵּר וְאֵין בָּהּ כֹּחַ לֵילֵד.
4Perhaps the Lord your God will take note of all the words of Rabshakeh whom the king of Assyria, his master, sent to blaspheme the living God, and he brought proof with the words that the Lord your God heard, and you shall offer up a prayer for the remnant that is found.' "   דאוּלַ֡י יִשְׁמַע֩ יְהֹוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ אֵ֣ת | כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י רַבְשָׁקֵ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֩ שְׁלָח֨וֹ מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֚וּר | אֲדֹנָיו֙ לְחָרֵף֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים חַ֔י וְהוֹכִ֙יחַ֙ בַּדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמַ֖ע יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְנָשָֹ֣אתָ תְפִלָּ֔ה בְּעַ֥ד הַשְּׁאֵרִ֖ית הַנִּמְצָאָֽה:
and he brought proof with the words eprover in French, to prove. He showed evidence to his statement, that he prospered wherever he went.   וְהוֹכִיחַ  אישפרובי"ר בְּלַעַ"ז (לְהַבְהִיר), הֶרְאָה פָּנִים לִדְבָרָיו, שֶׁהִצְלִיחַ בְּכָל אֲשֶׁר הָלַךְ.
5And King Hezekiah's servants came to Isaiah.   הוַיָּבֹ֗אוּ עַבְדֵ֛י הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ אֶל־יְשַֽׁעַיָֽהוּ:
6And Isaiah said to them, "So shall you say to your master, 'So has the Lord said, "Have no fear of the words that you have heard, that the servants of the king of Assyria blasphemed Me.   ווַיֹּ֚אמֶר לָהֶם֙ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ כֹּ֥ה תֹאמְר֖וּן אֶל־אֲדֹֽנֵיכֶ֑ם כֹּ֣ה | אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֗ה אַל־תִּירָא֙ מִפְּנֵ֚י הַדְּבָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁמַ֗עְתָּ אֲשֶׁ֧ר גִּדְּפ֛וּ נַעֲרֵ֥י מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֖וּר אֹתִֽי:
7Behold I will imbue him with a desire, and he will hear a rumor and return to his land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his land.' "   זהִנְנִ֨י נֹתֵ֥ן בּוֹ֙ ר֔וּחַ וְשָׁמַ֥ע שְׁמוּעָ֖ה וְשָׁ֣ב לְאַרְצ֑וֹ וְהִפַּלְתִּ֥יו בַּחֶ֖רֶב בְּאַרְצֽוֹ:
and he will hear a rumor and he will withdraw from you and return to his land. [He will] not [return] because of the rumor, but after a while he will return shamefacedly, and I will cause him to fall there by the sword. Now what was the rumor? (v. 9) “And he heard [a rumor] about Tirhakah.” He heard that Tirhakah had gone out to wage war against him. Consequently, he withdrew from Jerusalem and went to Cush, and waged war with Tirhakah, Put and Egypt, who were with him. He defeated him and took their most coveted treasures, and came to Jerusalem, where he fell. In reference to this, Isaiah stated (Is. 45:14), “The toil of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush… will pass by you….”   וְשָׁמַע שְׁמוּעָה  וְיַעֲלֶה מֵעֲלֵיכֶם וְשָׁב לְאַרְצוֹ, וְלֹא מֵחֲמַת הַשְּׁמוּעָה, אֶלָּא לְאַחַר זְמַן יָשׁוּב לְאַרְצוֹ בְּבשֶׁת פָּנִים, וְהִפַּלְתִּיו שָׁם בֶּחָרֶב, וּמַה הִיא הַשְּׁמוּעָה, וַיִּשְׁמַע אֶל תִּרְהָקָה, שָׁמַע שֶׁיָּצָא תִּרְהָקָה לְהִלָּחֵם עִמּוֹ, וְעָלָה מֵעַל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וְהָלַךְ לְכוּשׁ, וְנִלְחַם עִם תִּרְהָקָה וּפוּט וּמִצְרַיִם שֶׁעִמּוֹ, וְנִצְּחָם וְנָטַל חֶמְדַּת אוֹצְרוֹתֵיהֶם, וּבָא לִירוּשָׁלַיִם וְנָפַל שָׁם, הוּא שֶׁאָמַר: יְגִיעַ מִצְרַיִם וּסְחַר כּוּשׁ וְגוֹ' עָלַיִךְ יַעֲבֹרוּ וְגוֹ'.
8And Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria waging war against Libnah, for he heard that he had left Lachish.   חוַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ רַבְשָׁקֵ֔ה וַיִּמְצָא֙ אֶת־מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר נִלְחָ֖ם עַל־לִבְנָ֑ה כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֔ע כִּ֥י נָסַ֖ע מִלָּכִֽישׁ:
9And he heard [a rumor] about Tirhakah the king of Cush, saying, "He has gone out to wage war against you." And he again sent emissaries to Hezekiah, saying,   טוַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע אֶל־תִּרְהָ֚קָה מֶֽלֶךְ־כּוּשׁ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנֵּ֥ה יָצָ֖א לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם אִתָּ֑ךְ וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ לֵאמֹֽר:
and he again sent messengers to notify him that he was returning to his land only to wage war with Cush, and then to return here.   וַיָּשָׁב וַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים  לְהוֹדִיעַ שֶׁאֵינוֹ שָׁב לְאַרְצוֹ, אֶלָּא לְהִלָּחֵם עִם כּוּשׁ, וְלַחֲזֹר כָּאן.
10"So shall you say to Hezekiah the king of Judah, saying, 'Let your God in Whom you trust, not delude you, saying, 'Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand[s] of the king of Assyria.   יכֹּ֣ה תֹאמְר֗וּן אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֚הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַל־יַשִּׁאֲךָ֣ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתָּ֛ה בֹּטֵ֥חַ בּ֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹ֚א תִנָּתֵן֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלַ֔םִ בְּיַ֖ד מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר:
11Behold you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands to destroy them. Now will you be saved?   יאהִנֵּ֣ה | אַתָּ֣ה שָׁמַ֗עְתָּ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשֹ֜וּ מַלְכֵ֥י אַשּׁ֛וּר לְכָל־הָאֲרָצ֖וֹת לְהַֽחֲרִימָ֑ם וְאַתָּ֖ה תִּנָּצֵֽל:
12Did the gods of the nations whom my forefathers destroyed-Gozan and Haran, and Rezeph and the children of Eden which is in Telassar save them?   יבהַהִצִּ֨ילוּ אֹתָ֜ם אֱלֹהֵ֚י הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר שִׁחֲת֣וּ אֲבוֹתַ֔י אֶת־גּוֹזָ֖ן וְאֶת־חָרָ֑ן וְרֶ֥צֶף וּבְנֵי־עֶ֖דֶן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּתְלַאשָּֽׂר:
Eden the name of a province.   עֶדֶן  שֵׁם מְדִינָה.
13Where are the king of Hamath and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim? He exiled [them] and twisted [them]!   יגאַיּ֚וֹ מֶֽלֶךְ־חֲמָת֙ וּמֶ֣לֶךְ אַרְפָּ֔ד וּמֶ֖לֶךְ לָעִ֣יר סְפַרְוָ֑יִם הֵנַ֖ע וְעִוָּֽה:
he exiled and twisted [I.e.,] the king of Assyria exiled and twisted them.   הֵנַע וְעִוָּה  אוֹתָן מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר.
14And Hezekiah took the letters from the hand of the messengers and read them; he went up to the house of the Lord, and Hezekiah spread it out before the Lord.   ידוַיִּקַּ֨ח חִזְקִיָּ֧הוּ אֶת־הַסְּפָרִ֛ים מִיַּ֥ד הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים וַיִּקְרָאֵ֑ם וַיַּ֙עַל֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהֹוָ֔ה וַיִּפְרְשֵֹ֥הוּ חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה:
15And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said, "O Lord God of Israel, Who dwells between the cherubim, You alone are the God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made the heavens and the earth.   טווַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל חִזְקִיָּ֜הוּ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָה֘ וַיֹּאמֶר֒ יְהֹוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֚י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ ישֵׁ֣ב הַכְּרֻבִ֔ים אַתָּה־ה֚וּא הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ לְבַדְּךָ֔ לְכֹ֖ל מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָאָ֑רֶץ אַתָּ֣ה עָשִֹ֔יתָ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ:
16O Lord, incline Your ear and listen, O Lord, open Your eyes and see. And listen to the words of Sennacherib, who sent him to blaspheme the living God.   טזהַטֵּ֨ה יְהֹוָ֚ה | אָזְנְךָ֙ וּֽשֲׁמָ֔ע פְּקַ֧ח יְהֹוָ֛ה עֵינֶ֖יךָ וּרְאֵ֑ה וּשְׁמַ֗ע אֵת דִּבְרֵ֣י סַנְחֵרִ֔יב אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁלָח֔וֹ לְחָרֵ֖ף אֱלֹהִ֥ים חָֽי:
17Indeed, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their land.   יזאָמְנָ֖ם יְהֹוָ֑ה הֶחֱרִ֜יבוּ מַלְכֵ֥י אַשּׁ֛וּר אֶת־הַגּוֹיִ֖ם וְאֶת־אַרְצָֽם:
Indeed It is true that the kings of Assyria destroyed the peoples and committed their deities to the fire.   אָמְנָם  אֱמֶת הוּא שֶׁהֶחֱרִיבוּ מַלְכֵי אַשּׁוּר אֶת הָעַמִּים, וְנָתְנוּ אֶת אֱלֹהֵיהֶם בָּאֵשׁ.
18And they have committed their gods to the fire, for they are not gods, but the handiwork of man, wood and stone, and they destroyed them.   יחוְנָתְנ֥וּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם בָּאֵ֑שׁ כִּי֩ לֹ֨א אֱלֹהִ֜ים הֵ֗מָּה כִּ֣י אִם־מַעֲשֵֹ֧ה יְדֵֽי־אָדָ֛ם עֵ֥ץ וָאֶ֖בֶן וַֽיְאַבְּדֽוּם:
19And now, O Lord our God, please deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the Lord God alone."   יטוְעַתָּה֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ הוֹשִׁיעֵ֥נוּ נָ֖א מִיָּד֑וֹ וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ כָּל־מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֥י אַתָּ֛ה יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים לְבַדֶּֽךָ:
20And Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, "So has the Lord God of Israel said, 'I have heard what you prayed to me concerning Sennacherib, king of Assyria.   כוַיִּשְׁלַח֙ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֣הוּ בֶן־אָמ֔וֹץ אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּֽה־אָמַ֚ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִתְפַּלַּ֧לְתָּ אֵלַ֛י אֶל־סַנְחֵרִ֥ב מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֖וּר שָׁמָֽעְתִּי:
21This is the word that the Lord has spoken about him: 'The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and has mocked you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.   כאזֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה עָלָ֑יו בָּזָ֨ה לְךָ֜ לָעֲגָ֣ה לְךָ֗ בְּתוּלַת֙ בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן אַחֲרֶ֙יךָ֙ רֹ֣אשׁ הֵנִ֔יעָה בַּ֖ת יְרוּשָׁלָֽםִ:
22Whom have you insulted and blasphemed, and upon whom have you raised [your] voice? And you have lifted your eyes on high against the Holy One of Israel.   כבאֶת־מִ֚י חֵרַ֙פְתָּ֙ וְגִדַּ֔פְתָּ וְעַל־מִ֖י הֲרִימ֣וֹתָ קּ֑וֹל וַתִּשָּׂ֥א מָר֛וֹם עֵינֶ֖יךָ עַל־קְד֥וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:
23Through your messengers you have insulted the Lord, and you said, "With my many chariots I have ascended to the heights of mountains, to the end of the Lebanon, and I will cut down its tallest cedars, its choice cypresses, and I will come to its remotest lodge, to its farmland forest.   כגבְּיַ֣ד מַלְאָכֶיךָ֘ חֵרַ֣פְתָּ | אֲדֹנָי֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר בְּרֹ֥ב (כתיב בְּרֹ֥כב) רִכְבִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י עָלִ֛יתִי מְר֥וֹם הָרִ֖ים יַרְכְּתֵ֣י לְבָנ֑וֹן וְאֶכְרֹ֞ת קוֹמַ֚ת אֲרָזָיו֙ מִבְח֣וֹר בְּרשָׁ֔יו וְאָב֙וֹאָה֙ מְל֣וֹן קִצּ֔וֹ (כתיב קִצֹּ֔ה) יַ֖עַר כַּרְמִלּֽוֹ:
to the heights of mountains the Temple mount.   מְרוֹם הָרִים  הַר הַבַּיִת.
to the end of the Lebanon the Temple which whitens the sins (Heb. מַלְבִּין).   יַרְכְּתֵי לְבָנוֹן  בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ, שֶׁמַּלְבִּין עֲוֹנוֹת.
and I will cut down its tallest cedars I will not return until I have destroyed it.   וְאֶכְרֹת קוֹמַת אֲרָזָיו  לֹא אָשׁוּב עַד שֶׁאַחְרִיבֶנּוּ.
its remotest lodge [lit. the lodge of] its end.   קִצֹּה  סוֹפוֹ.
its farmland forest the fullness of its land and the beauty of its splendor.   יַעַר כַּרְמִלּוֹ  מְלִיאַת אַרְצוֹ וְיוֹפִי הֲדָרוֹ.
24I dug and drank strange water, and I dry up with the soles of my feet all rivers of the siege."   כדאֲנִ֣י קַ֔רְתִּי וְשָׁתִ֖יתִי מַ֣יִם זָרִ֑ים וְאַחְרִב֙ בְּכַף־פְּעָמַ֔י כֹּ֖ל יְאֹרֵ֥י מָצֽוֹר:
I dug and drank strange water I.e., to say, I started all my deeds and completed [them], as one who digs a hole and finds strange water and drinks it. Flowing water he calls “strange” since until now no one knew of them.   אֲנִי קַרְתִּי וְשָׁתִיתִי מַיִם זָרִים  כְּלוֹמַר הִתְחַלְתִּי בְּכָל מַעֲשֶׂה וְגָמַרְתִּי, כְּזֶה הַכּוֹרֶה בּוֹר וּמוֹצֵא מַיִם זָרִים וְשׁוֹתֶה. מַיִם נוֹבְעִים קוֹרֵא זָרִים, לְפִי שֶׁעַד הֵנָּה לֹא הִכִּירוּ בָּהֶם.
and I will dry up with the soles of my feet If I would besiege a city reliant upon its rivers, I would bring many troops upon it who would dry up its rivers with their drinking and the drinking of their cattle and by the treading of their feet.   וְאַחֲרִב בְּכַף פְּעָמַי  אִם צַרְתִּי עַל עִיר הַבּוֹטַחַת בְּנַהֲרוֹתֶיהָ, הֵבֵאתִי עָלֶיהָ גְּיָסוֹת רַבּוֹת שֶׁהוֹבִישׁוּ יְאוֹרֶיהָ בִּשְׁתִיָּתָם וּשְׁתִיַּת בְּהֶמְתָּם וּמִרְמַס רַגְלֵיהֶם.
and I will dry up This is the present tense. So is my wont always.   וְאַחֲרִב  לְשׁוֹן הֹוֶה, כֵּן דַּרְכִּי תָמִיד.
rivers of the siege all the rivers of the city that is besieged by me.  
25Have you not heard from afar what I did in days of yore, and what I formed? Now I have brought it, and it shall be to make desolate, blossoming hills, [of] fortified cities.   כההֲלֹֽא־שָׁמַ֚עְתָּ לְמֵֽרָחוֹק֙ אֹתָ֣הּ עָשִֹ֔יתִי לְמִ֥ימֵי קֶ֖דֶם וִֽיצַרְתִּ֑יהָ עַתָּ֣ה הֲבֵ֣יאֹתִ֔יהָ וּתְהִ֗י לַהְשׁא֛וֹת (כתיב לַהְשׁ֛וֹת) גַּלִּ֥ים נִצִּ֖ים עָרִ֥ים בְּצֻרֽוֹת:
Have you not heard from afar Why do you boast and aggrandize yourself with this? This is not yours, for you have heard from afar through the prophets, that I decreed upon the nations to bring you upon them, as the matter that is written (Is. 7:4), “Ho, Assyria, the staff of My wrath.” [In Is. 37:26 Rashi adds:] More than seventy years since Amos prophesied two years before the earthquake (Amos 7:17), “and Israel shall be exiled from upon its land.” Since then, you should have heard that I wrought and prepared this retribution.   הֲלֹא שָׁמַעְתָּ לְמֵרָחוֹק  לָמָּה תִתְפָּאֵר וְתִתְגַּדֵּל בָּזֹאת, לֹא שֶׁלְּךָ הִיא, כִּי שָׁמַעְתָּ לְמֵרָחוֹק עַל יְדֵי הַנְּבִיאִים שֶׁגָּזַרְתִּי עַל הָעַמִּים לַהֲבִיאֲךָ עֲלֵיהֶם, כְּעִנְיַן שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: הוֹי אַשּׁוּר שֵׁבֶט אַפִּי.
in the days of yore Since the world was created, it entered My thought, as it is said (Is. 30:33), “For Gehinnom is arranged from days of yore; that too was prepared for the king.” This refers to Sennacherib, who was burned in the fire of Gehinnom, as it is said (Is. 31:9), “The word of the Lord, Who has fire in Zion.”   לְמִימֵי קֶדֶם  מִשֶּׁנִּבְרָא הָעוֹלָם, עָלְתָה בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: כִּי עָרוּךְ מֵאֶתְמוּל תָּפְתֶּה גַּם הִיא לַמֶּלֶךְ הוּכָן, זֶה סַנְחֵרִיב שֶׁנִּשְׂרַף בְּאֵשׁ גֵּיהִנֹּם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: נְאֻם ה' אֲשֶׁר אוּר לוֹ בְּצִיּוֹן.
Now I have brought it and this is the power that is in your hand   עַתָּה הֲבֵיאתִיהָ  וְזֶה הַכֹּחַ שֶׁבְּיָדְךָ.
and it shall be the coming of My decree [shall be] to make desolate fortified cities into blossoming hills, into piles of earth upon which vegetables grow, for you destroy them because of My decree.   וּתְהִי  בִּיאָתָהּ שֶל גְּזֵרָתִי, לְהִשָּׁאוֹת עָרִים בְּצוּרוֹת, לִהְיוֹת לְגַלִּים נִצִּים, לְגַלֵּי אֲדָמָה שֶׁצּוֹמְחִין בָּהֶן יְרָקוֹת, שֶׁאַתָּה מַחֲרִיבָן בִּגְזֵרָתִי.
to make desolate [לַהְשׁוֹת in Heb.] an expression of desolation, loneliness.   לַהְשׁוֹת  לְשׁוֹן שְׁאִיָּה גַּלְמוּדָה.
26And their inhabitants became short of strength, broken and ashamed; they were [like] the grass of the field and green herbage, like grass of the roofs, and blast before becoming standing grain.   כווְיֽשְׁבֵיהֶן֙ קִצְרֵי־יָ֔ד חַ֖תּוּ וַיֵּבֹ֑שׁוּ הָי֞וּ עֵ֚שֶׂב שָׂדֶה֙ וִ֣ירַק דֶּ֔שֶׁא חֲצִ֣יר גַּגּ֔וֹת וּשְׁדֵפָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י קָמָֽה:
And their inhabitants became short of strength Those whom weakened before you, and the might is not yours. You are not mighty, but they are weak.   וְישְׁבֵיהֶן קִצְרֵי יָד  הֵם, שֶׁאֲנִי הִתַּשְׁתִּי אֶת כֹּחָן לְפָנֶיךָ, וְאֵין הַגְּבוּרָה שֶׁלְּךָ, אֵין אַתָּה גִּבּוֹר, אֲבָל הֵם חַלָּשִׁים.
like grass of the roofs which hastens to dry.   חֲצִיר גַּגּוֹת  הַמְמַהֵר לִיבַשׁ.
and blast before becoming standing grain like ears of grain, blasted before they hardened to become standing grain.   וּשְׁדֵפָה לִפְנֵי קָמָה  כַּשִּׁבֳּלִים הַשְּׁדוּפוֹת, בְּטֶרֶם יִתְקַשּׁוּ לָבֹא לִידֵי קָמָה.
27And your sitting and your going out and your coming I know, and your raging against Me.   כזוְשִׁבְתְּךָ֛ וְצֵאתְךָ֥ וּבֹאֲךָ֖ יָדָ֑עְתִּי וְאֵ֖ת הִֽתְרַגֶּזְךָ֥ אֵלָֽי:
And your sitting and your going out and your coming Jonathan paraphrased: And your sitting in counsel, and your going out to wage war, and your coming to the land of Israel, is revealed to Me. It emanated from Me.   וְשִׁבְתְּךָ וְצֵאתְךָ וּבֹאֲךָ  תִּרְגֵּם יוֹנָתָן: וּמִיתְבָךְ בְּעֵצָה וּמִפְקָךְ לְאַגָּחָא קְרָבָא וּמֵיתָךְ לְאַרְעָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל גָּלֵי קֳדָמַי, מֵאִתִּי נִהְיְתָה.
and your raging against Me And the fact that you will become arrogant and aroused against Me with anger and tumult. (Estomir in O.F.)   וְאֵת הִתְרַגֶּזְךָ אֵלָי  וְאֶת אֲשֶׁר סוֹפְךָ לְהִתְגָּאוֹת וּלְהִתְעוֹרֵר אֵלַי בְּרֹגֶז וְרַעַשׁ, אשטרימי"ה בְּלַעַ"ז (הִתְרַגְזוּת, הִתְרַגְשׁוּת).
28Because you have raged against Me, and your tumult has ascended into My ears, I will place my ring in your nose and My bit in your lips, and I will return you by the road by which you have come.   כחיַעַן הִתְרַגֶּזְךָ֣ אֵלַ֔י וְשַׁאֲנַנְךָ֖ עָלָ֣ה בְאָזְנָ֑י וְשַׂמְתִּ֨י חַחִ֜י בְּאַפֶּ֗ךָ וּמִתְגִּי֙ בִּשְׂפָתֶ֔יךָ וַהֲשִׁ֣בֹתִ֔יךָ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥אתָ בָּֽהּ:
and your tumult like וּשְׁאוֹנְךָ.   וְשַׁאֲנַנְךָ  כְּמוֹ וּשְׁאוֹנְךָ.
My ring [חַחִי in Heb.] a kind of ring by which they pull an animal whose behavior is bad, as we learned (Shabbath 5:1), “And all animals that are usually pulled with a ring may go out with a ring.”   חַחִי  כְּמִין שִׁיר הוּא, שֶׁמּוֹשְׁכִין בּוֹ בְּהֵמָה שֶׁעֲסָקֶיהָ רָעִים, כְּמוֹ שֶׁשָּׁנִינוּ: כָּל בַּעֲלֵי הַשִּׁיר יוֹצְאִין בְּשִׁיר.
and my bit [Heb. מִתְגִי,] Jonathan rendered זְמַם, which is [made] of iron, and which they insert into the nostrils of a female camel, and she is pulled with it, since her behavior is bad. This is what we learned (Shabbath ibid.) “and the female camel with a nose ring.”   וּמִתְגִּי  תִּרְגֵּם יוֹנָתָן: זְמָם, וְהוּא שֶל בַּרְזֶל, וְתוֹחֲבִין אוֹתוֹ בִּנְחִירֵי הַנָּאקָה וְנִמְשֶׁכֶת בּוֹ, לְפִי שֶׁעֲסָקֶיהָ רָעִים, וְהוּא שֶׁשָּׁנִינוּ: וְּנָאקָה בַּחֲטָם.
29And this shall be the sign for you, this year you shall eat what grows by itself, and the next year, what grows from the tree stumps, and in the third year, sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat their fruit.   כטוְזֶה־לְּךָ֣ הָא֔וֹת אָכ֚וֹל הַשָּׁנָה֙ סָפִ֔יחַ וּבַשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית סָחִ֑ישׁ וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗ית זִרְע֧וּ וְקִצְר֛וּ וְנִטְע֥וּ כְרָמִ֖ים וְאִכְל֥וּ פִרְיָֽם:
And this will be the sign for you The prophet said this to Hezekiah. And this [prophecy] which I said to you that Sennacherib will fall here, will be a sign for you also for the approaching days, for you are afraid of dying from hunger, since Sennacherib destroyed the land and chopped down the trees.   וְזֶה לְּךָ הָאוֹת  לְחִזְקִיָּהוּ אָמַר הַנָּבִיא, וְזֶה שֶׁאָמַרְתִּי לְךָ סַנְחֵרִיב יִפֹּל כָּאן, יְהִי לָךְ לְאוֹת אַף לַיָּמִים הַבָּאִים שֶׁאַתֶּם יְרֵאִים לָמוּת בָּרָעָב, לְפִי שֶׁסַּנְחֵרִיב הֶחֱרִיב אֶת הָאָרֶץ וְגָדַע אֶת הָאִילָנוֹת.
this year you shall eat what grows by itself This year plants will grow for you, and you will be sustained by them.   אָכוֹל הַשָּׁנָה סָפִיחַ  בַּשָּׁנָה הַזֹּאת יִצְמְחוּ לָכֶם צְמָחִים, וְתִתְפַּרְנְסוּ מֵהֶם.
what grows from the tree stumps the chopped off trees that will grow (the products of the trees that will grow), and when you see My word fulfilled concerning the fall of the armies, it will be a sign for you that this promise, too, will be fulfilled.   סָחִישׁ  גְּדוּעֵי אִילָנוֹת שֶׁיִּצְמְחוּ, וּכְשֶׁתִּרְאֶה דְּבָרַי קַיָּם בְּמַפָּלַת הָאוֹכְלֻסִין, יִהְיֶה לְךָ לְאוֹת שֶׁאַף הַבְטָחָה זוֹ תִּתְקַיֵּם.
30And the remaining survivors of the house of Judah shall continue to take root below and they will produce fruit above.   לוְיָ֨סְפָ֜ה פְּלֵיטַ֧ת בֵּית־יְהוּדָ֛ה הַנִּשְׁאָרָ֖ה שֹׁ֣רֶשׁ לְמָ֑טָּה וְעָשָֹ֥ה פְרִ֖י לְמָֽעְלָה:
31For from Jerusalem shall come out a remnant, and survivors from Mt. Zion; the zeal of the Lord of Hosts shall do this.   לאכִּ֚י מִירוּשָׁלַ֙םִ֙ תֵּצֵ֣א שְׁאֵרִ֔ית וּפְלֵיטָ֖ה מֵהַ֣ר צִיּ֑וֹן קִנְאַ֛ת יְהֹוָ֥ה ( צְבָא֖וֹת קרי ולא כתיב ) תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־זֹּֽאת:
the zeal of the Lord of Hosts that He will be zealous for His honor and for His name, not that you have any merit, for Ahaz your father committed many wicked deeds.   קִנְאַת ה' צְבָאוֹת  שֶׁיְּקַנֵּא לִכְבוֹדוֹ וְלִשְׁמוֹ, וְלֹא שֶׁיֵּשׁ זְכוּת בְּיֶדְכֶם, כִּי הַרְבֵּה הִרְשִׁיעַ אָחָז אָבִיךָ.
32Therefore, so has the Lord said concerning the king of Assyria: 'He shall not enter this city, neither shall he shoot there an arrow, nor shall he advance upon it with a shield, nor shall he pile up a siege mound against it.   לבלָכֵ֗ן כֹּֽה־אָמַ֚ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר לֹ֚א יָבֹא֙ אֶל־הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את וְלֹֽא־יוֹרֶ֥ה שָׁ֖ם חֵ֑ץ וְלֹֽא־יְקַדְּמֶ֣נָּה מָגֵ֔ן וְלֹֽא־יִשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ עָלֶ֖יהָ סֹלְלָֽה:
nor shall he advance upon it wlth a shield He shall not set a shield before it. [In Isaiah 37:33, Rashi adds,] Since the Aramaic translation of “before” is קֳדָם.   וְלֹא יְקַדְּמֶנָּה  לֹא יֵעָרֵךְ לְפָנֶיהָ מָגֵן.
a siege mound [Heb. סֹלְלָה,] a heap of earth to raise a mount upon which to stand to embattle the city. Since one presses it down and beats it with sticks and sledge hammers, so that it be trodden and pressed down with strength, it is called סֹלְלָה, an expression similar to (Is. 62:10) “Beat down, beat down the highway.” [Heb. סֹלוּ סֹלוּ הַמְסִלָה.]   סֹלְלָה  צִבּוּר אֲדָמָה לְהַגְבִּיהַּ תֵּל לַעֲמֹד עָלָיו לְהִלָּחֵם עַל הָעִיר, וְעַל שֵׁם שֶׁהוּא כּוֹבְשׁוֹ וְחוֹבְטוֹ בְּעֵצִים וּמַקָּבוֹת כְּדֵי שֶׁיְּהֵא נָדוֹשׁ וְכָבוּשׁ בְּחֹזֶק, קוֹרֵהוּ סוֹלְלָה, לְשׁוֹן: סֹלּוּ סֹלּוּ הַמְסִלָּה.
33By the way he comes he shall return, and this city he shall not enter,' says the Lord.   לגבַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־יָבֹ֖א בָּ֣הּ יָשׁ֑וּב וְאֶל־הָעִ֥יר הַזֹּ֛את לֹ֥א יָבֹ֖א נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה:
34'And I will protect this city to save it, for My sake and for the sake of My servant David.' "   לדוְגַנּוֹתִ֛י אֶל־הָעִ֥יר הַזֹּ֖את לְהֽוֹשִׁיעָ֑הּ לְמַֽעֲנִ֔י וּלְמַ֖עַן דָּוִ֥ד עַבְדִּֽי:
35And it came to pass on that night that an angel of the Lord went out and slew one hundred eighty-five thousand of the camp of Assyria. And they arose in the morning, and behold they were all dead corpses.   להוַיְהִי֘ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַהוּא֒ וַיֵּצֵ֣א | מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהֹוָ֗ה וַיַּךְ֙ בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה אַשּׁ֔וּר מֵאָ֛ה שְׁמוֹנִ֥ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה אָ֑לֶף וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּ֥ה כֻלָּ֖ם פְּגָרִ֥ים מֵתִֽים:
And it came to pass on that night when Sennacherib returned from [warring] with Cush, and he came as far as Nob, which was near Jerusalem.   וַיְהִי בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא  כְּשֶׁשָּׁב סַנְחֵרִיב מֵעַל כּוּשׁ, וּבָא עַד נֹב שֶׁהָיְתָה סְמוּכָה לִירוּשָׁלַיִם.
one hundred eighty five thousand All of them were heads of companies.   מֵאָה שְׁמוֹנִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה אָלֶף  כֻּלָּם רָאשֵׁי גְּיָסוֹת.
36And Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, left and went away, and he returned and dwelt in Nineveh.   לווַיִּסַּ֣ע וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ וַיָּ֖שָׁב סַנְחֵרִ֣יב מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֑וּר וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּנִֽינְוֵֽה:
and dwelt in Nineveh That is the capital of the land of Assyria. [In Isaiah 37:37, Rashi adds,] as it is said (Gen. 10:11), “From that land Ashur came out, and he built Nineveh…”   וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּנִינְוֵה  הִיא רֹאשׁ לְאֶרֶץ אַשּׁוּר.
37And he was prostrating himself in the temple of Nisroch his god, and Adramelech and Sharezer, his sons, slew him with a sword, and they fled to the land of Ararat, and his son Esarhaddon reigned in his stead.   לזוַיְהִי֩ ה֨וּא מִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֜ה בֵּ֣ית | נִסְרֹ֣ךְ אֱלֹהָ֗יו וְֽאַדְרַמֶּ֨לֶךְ וְשַׂרְאֶ֚צֶר ( בָּנָיו֙ קרי ולא כתיב ) הִכֻּ֣הוּ בַחֶ֔רֶב וְהֵ֥מָּה נִמְלְט֖וּ אֶ֣רֶץ אֲרָרָ֑ט וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ אֵֽסַר־חַדֹּ֥ן בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו:
the temple of Nisroch his god a board from Noah’s ark.   בֵּית נִסְרֹךְ אֱלֹהָיו  נֶסֶר מִתֵּבָתוֹ שֶׁל נֹחַ.
slew him They heard him that he said he would slaughter them before him if they (sic) (he- kara) [would save him so that the princes of the kingdom, whose sons perished because of him, would not kill him].   הִכֻּהוּ בַחֶרֶב  שָׁמְעוּ אוֹתוֹ שֶׁאָמַר לְשָׁחְטָן לְפָנָיו אִם יַצִּילוּהוּ, שֶׁלֹּא יַהַרְגוּהוּ שָׂרֵי הַמַּלְכוּת שֶׁמֵּתוּ בְנֵיהֶם עַל יָדוֹ.
