1Now the day came about that the angels of God came to stand beside the Lord, and the Adversary too came among them to stand beside the Lord. |

אוַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל־יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֚א גַם־הַשָּׂטָן֙ בְּתֹכָ֔ם לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל־יְהֹוָֽה: |
2Now the Lord said to the Adversary, "Where are you coming from?" And the Adversary replied to the Lord and said, "From going to and fro on the earth and from walking in it." |

בוַיֹּ֚אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֔ן אֵ֥י מִזֶּ֖ה תָּבֹ֑א וַיַּ֨עַן הַשָּׂטָ֚ן אֶת־יְהֹוָה֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר מִשֻּׁ֣ט בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּמֵֽהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ בָּֽהּ: |
“Where are you coming from?”. Where is the place about which you may say, “From this place I come” ? |

אי מזה תבוא.
איה מקום שתוכל לומר מזה אני בא:
|
3And the Lord said to the Adversary, "Have you paid attention to My servant Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a sincere and upright man, God-fearing and shunning evil, and he still maintains his sincerity. Yet you enticed Me against him." |

גוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָה֜ אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֗ן הֲשַׂ֣מְתָּ לִבְּךָ֘ אֶל־עַבְדִּ֣י אִיּוֹב֒ כִּי֩ אֵ֨ין כָּמֹה֜וּ בָּאָ֗רֶץ אִ֣ישׁ תָּ֧ם וְיָשָׁ֛ר יְרֵ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְסָ֣ר מֵרָ֑ע וְעֹדֶ֙נּוּ֙ מַֽחֲזִ֣יק בְּתֻמָּת֔וֹ וַתְּסִיתֵ֥נִי ב֖וֹ לְבַלְּע֥וֹ חִנָּֽם: |
maintains. Heb. מחזיק, holds, as in (Exod. 4:4) “and he held (ויחזק) onto it;” (Prov. 26:17), “One who holds (מחזיק) onto a dog’s ears.” |

מחזיק.
אוחז כמו (שמות ד׳:ד׳) וישלח ידו ויחזק בו מחזיק באזני כלב (משלי כ״ו:י״ז):
|
Yet you enticed Me against him. You enticed Me to destroy him. Every expression of הֲסָתָה is only an expression of attracting a person to his counsel. |
|
ותסיתני בו.
הסיתני לבולעו כל לשון הסתה אינו אלא לשון המשכה שממשיך את האדם לעצתו:
|
4Now the Adversary replied to the Lord and said, "Skin for skin, and whatever a person has he will give for his life. |
|
דוַיַּ֧עַן הַשָּׂטָ֛ן אֶת־יְהֹוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר ע֣וֹר בְּעַד־ע֗וֹר וְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָאִ֔ישׁ יִתֵּ֖ן בְּעַ֥ד נַפְשֽׁוֹ: |
Skin for skin. One limb for another limb. It is human nature that, when one sees a sword coming toward his head, he protects it with his arm in front of it. Surely a person will give all the money he has. |
|
עור בעד עור.
אבר בפני אבר כן דרך בני אדם כשרואה החרב באה על ראשו מגין בזרועו לפניו וכ"ש כל אשר לאיש בממון יתן:
|
for his life. For his life to protect it. Because this person knows that he is liable to lose his life, he does not worry about his money. |
|
בעד נפשו.
בפני נפשו להגין לפי שזה יודע בנפשו שנתחייב לפיכך אינו מצטער על ממונו:
|
5But, stretch forth Your hand now and touch his bones and his flesh, will he not blaspheme You to Your face?" |
|
האוּלָם֙ שְֽׁלַח־נָ֣א יָֽדְךָ֔ וְגַ֥ע אֶל־עַצְמ֖וֹ וְאֶל־בְּשָׂר֑וֹ אִם־לֹ֥א אֶל־פָּנֶ֖יךָ יְבָֽרְכֶֽךָּ: |
But. Heb. אולם, but. |

אולם.
אבל:
|
will he not. Will You not see immediately that he will blaspheme You to Your face? |
|
אם לא.
תראה בו מיד שעל פניך יברכך:
|
6And the Lord said to the Adversary, "Here he is in your hands, but preserve his life." |
|
ווַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֖ן הִנּ֣וֹ בְיָדֶ֑ךָ אַ֥ךְ אֶת־נַפְשׁ֖וֹ שְׁמֹֽר: |
but preserve his life. that it does not go out. From here the Sages said, “The Adversary’s pain was greater than Job’s. This is analogous to one saying to his friend, ‘Break this barrel but preserve its wine.’” |
|
אך את נפשו שמור.
שלא תצא מכאן אמרו חכמים קשה היה צערו של שטן יותר משל איוב כאומר לחבירו שבור חבית זו ושמור יינה:
|
7Now the Adversary departed from the presence of the Lord, and he smote Job with severe boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. |
|
זוַיֵּצֵא֙ הַשָּׂטָ֔ן מֵאֵ֖ת פְּנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיַּ֚ךְ אֶת־אִיּוֹב֙ בִּשְׁחִ֣ין רָ֔ע מִכַּ֥ף רַגְל֖וֹ וְעַ֥ד (כתיב עַ֥ד) קָדְקֳדֽוֹ: |
8Then he took himself a potsherd to scratch himself with, and he sat down in the midst of the ashes. |

חוַיִּֽקַּח־ל֣וֹ חֶ֔רֶשׂ לְהִתְגָּרֵ֖ד בּ֑וֹ וְה֖וּא יֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּתֽוֹךְ־הָאֵֽפֶר: |
to scratch himself with. Heb. להתגרד.This word is spelled with a “dalet.” It is a Mishnaic expression (Rosh Hashanah 27b): “If he scraped it (גרדו) and reduced it to its normal size,” but גורר with a “reish” is only an expression of dragging, like (Shabbath 29b), “A person may drag a bed or a bench.” |

להתגרד בו.
בדלי"ת כתוב ולשון משנה היא גורדו ומעמידו על גלדו אבל גורר ברי"ש אינו אלא לשון סחיבה כמו גורר אדם מטה וספסל:

9Then his wife said to him, "Do you still maintain your sincerity? Blaspheme God and die!" |

טוַתֹּ֚אמֶר לוֹ֙ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ עֹֽדְךָ֖ מַֽחֲזִ֣יק בְּתֻמָּתֶ֑ךָ בָּרֵ֥ךְ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וָמֻֽת: |
maintain. Heb. מחזיק, hold. |

and die. Heb. ומת. This is an imperative expression, as (Deut. 32:50), “And die on the mountain.” |

10And he said to her, "You talk as one of the disgraceful women talks. Shall we also accept the good from God, and not accept the evil?" Despite all this, Job did not sin with his lips. |
|
יוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֶ֗יהָ כְּדַבֵּ֞ר אַחַ֚ת הַנְּבָלוֹת֙ תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי גַּ֣ם אֶת־הַטּ֗וֹב נְקַבֵּל֙ מֵאֵ֣ת הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאֶת־הָרָ֖ע לֹ֣א נְקַבֵּ֑ל בְּכָל־זֹ֛את לֹא־חָטָ֥א אִיּ֖וֹב בִּשְׂפָתָֽיו: |
also. Is it not enough that He created us? Should we also accept the good, but not accept the evil? This is a wonder. |

11Now Job's three friends heard about all this evil that befell him, and they came, each one from his place; Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they met together to come to bemoan him and console him. |

יאוַיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת | רֵעֵ֣י אִיּ֗וֹב אֵ֣ת כָּל־הָֽרָעָ֣ה הַזֹּאת֘ הַבָּ֣אָה עָלָיו֒ וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִמְּקֹמ֔וֹ אֱלִיפַ֚ז הַתֵּֽימָנִי֙ וּבִלְדַּ֣ד הַשּׁוּחִ֔י וְצוֹפַ֖ר הַנַּֽעֲמָתִ֑י וַיִּוָּֽעֲד֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לָב֥וֹא לָנֽוּד־ל֖וֹ וּלְנַֽחֲמֽוֹ: |

to bemoan. Heb. לנוד, as in (Isa. 51:19): “who will lament (ינוד) for you?” (Jer. 22:10), “neither bemoan (תנדו) him.” |

כמו מי ינוד לך (ישעיהו נ״א:י״ט) לא תנודו לו (ירמיהו ט״ו:ה׳):
|
12Now they lifted their eyes [and looked] from afar but they did not recognize him; so they raised their voices and wept, and each one rent his robe, and they threw earth on their heads towards heaven. |
|
יבוַיִּשְׂא֨וּ אֶת־עֵינֵיהֶ֚ם מֵֽרָחוֹק֙ וְלֹ֣א הִכִּירֻ֔הוּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ קוֹלָ֖ם וַיִּבְכּ֑וּ וַיִּקְרְעוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מְעִל֔וֹ וַיִּזְרְק֥וּ עָפָ֛ר עַל־רָֽאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה: |
but they did not recognize him. because his face had changed as a result of the agonies. |

ולא הכירוהו.
כי נשתנו פניו מחמת הייסורין:
|
towards heaven. i.e., high over their heads. That was their mourning custom. |
|
השמימה.
כלומר למעל' מראשיה' (הרבה) והוא היה להם מנהג אבל:
|
13Now they sat down with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights, but no one said a word to him because they perceived that the pain was very severe. |
|
יגוַיֵּֽשְׁב֚וּ אִתּוֹ֙ לָאָ֔רֶץ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים וְשִׁבְעַ֣ת לֵיל֑וֹת וְאֵֽין־דֹּבֵ֚ר אֵלָיו֙ דָּבָ֔ר כִּ֣י רָא֔וּ כִּֽי־גָדַ֥ל הַכְּאֵ֖ב מְאֹֽד: |
on the ground. On the ground, to share his pain. |
