Preparations are underway for the third-annual Chanukah party with the Portland Trail Blazers, whose fans will enjoy entertainment set to Jewish music and a center court menorah lighting at the team’s Dec. 15 faceoff against the Sacramento Kings at the Rose Garden.

Sponsored by Chabad-Lubavitch of Oregon, the festivities have been getting more and more popular with community members, says Rabbi Chaim Shmaya Wilhelm, a rabbinical student and Portland native who has been coordinating the celebration for three years running.

“Last year, the menorah was lit in the concourse area,” says Wilhelm, who is arranging for a kosher hot dog stand to feed hungry spectators. “This year, the lighting will take place in the middle of the arena itself.”

Locals point to the menorah lighting and the appearance of Kings rookie Omri Casspi – who made history as the first Israeli player selected in the NBA draft – as the expected highlights of the Dec. 15 game.

“This is an exciting way to celebrate your Jewish heritage,” says Tammy Meyer, who purchased tickets for her family of five.

Game attendees will be able to receive free Chanukah menorah lighting kits at the Chabad booth.
