An Israeli man in his 60s is recovering from surgery in Berlin, though his wife remains missing after a Dec. 19 terrorist truck attack that killed at least 12 people and injured more than 50. A suspect who had been arrested near the scene was released, and the perpetrators remain at large.

After visiting the Israeli victim, who has not yet been identified by authorities, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, rabbi of the Jewish community of Berlin and director of Chabad of Berlin, says that he and his staff are in touch with hospitals in the city, and they and local authorities are doing their best to find the man’s wife.

Teichtal noted that he has been in touch with the victim’s family in Israel since early Tuesday morning and is keeping in touch with his personal doctor as well. He stated: “I stood next to the injured man, and said Psalms and prayed for his full recovery. My community and I will continue praying for his health, and for the recovery of all the victims of the attack, and we hope to hear good news about his wife, too.”

The Central Council of Jews in Germany reacted “with great sadness” to Monday’s attack, but cautioned against letting terrorism spoil the spirit of the upcoming holidays.
