Ten people were killed and at least 15 were injured after a rental van barreled through a stretch of sidewalks on a busy northern Toronto avenue, mowing down pedestrians for almost two miles.
The driver of the van was identified as Alek Minassian, 25, who was charged with 10 counts of murder. Authorities have not commented on his motives. He “just starting hitting everybody,” an eyewitness told Canadian television network CTV. The driver, he said, was just "hitting people one by one."
At least 10 victims were transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where two people were pronounced dead upon arrival. Five people remain in critical condition at Sunnybrook, two are in serious condition, and one is in fair condition.
Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries around Toronto rushed to local hospitals and prepared to assist family and friends of those killed and injured, as well to comfort a community set on edge by the attack. Rabbi Levi Gansburg, co-director of Chabad of York Mills, and Rabbi Moshe Steiner, co-director of Uptown Chabad Lubavitch, who lives only five minutes from the scene, were at local hospitals. They noted that everyone’s thoughts and prayers were with the victims and their families.
